How You Can Use Newspapers
The newspaper is an underused tool to determine what’s happening in the world of work (and we’re not talking about job postings in the classifieds section!) Business newspapers, or the business section of a newspaper, have lots of stories about businesses that are opening, closing, developing a new product, and so much more. Use this information to target your job search, to prepare for a “cold call”, or even prepare for a job interview. And don’t forget to search the “archives” section of the newspaper for older articles. Check often!
“Former Maple Leaf Plant in Burlington sold to Ontario Packer”
April 11 2012, The Hamilton Spectator
Will jobs be added or lost? Does this industry have my occupation? Are there positions with the “parent” company? Is this closure representative of what is happening in this industry?
“Porsche Oakville opening in 2013”
June 15, 2012, Oakville Beaver
What kinds of jobs will be available? Who can I contact before they advertise positions? Can I follow this company on Twitter?

Practice searching for articles related to your occupation or industry.
Select the business section of one newspaper. Scan the headlines for any articles about your occupation or industry. Make a list of company names, contact information, and whatever else you can find in the article.
Next, look for the “search” button on the newspaper’s website (usually top, right corner). Type the name of your occupation or industry plus different words like “jobs” or “trends”.
What kind of information did you find? Do you have a list of companies you can contact about possible opportunities?
Using the newspaper is a great, and easy, way to learn about what’s happening in the city where you want to work!
